Loans for Undergraduate Students (PLUS):
PLUS loans are available to
parents of undergraduate students to allow funding
of any educational expenses. PLUS loans can
be used to cover expenses such as books, living
expenses, tuition, and room and board.
Eligibility
– Must be a citizen or
permanent resident of the United States. Student
must be enrolled in a post-secondary institution
as either a full or part-time undergraduate
student. Parent must not have any adverse credit.
Interest Rate – Rates
are variable and may change July 1, however,
they are capped at 9%. Currently, the interest
rate is 4.1%.
Pluses
• Loan is not based on income or assets
• Parent has up to 10 years to repay the
loan
• No collateral is required for loan.
• Loan may be tax deductible.
Minuses
• Repayment period begins 60 days after
loan is withdrawn
• 4% origination/insurance fee applies
• Credit history check is required.
• Loan limit is up to the total cost of
the student’s education minus any other
forms of financial aid.
