College
Grants:
Like scholarships, grants are
a source of financial aid that does not have to be repaid.
The most popular grant available is a Federal Pell
Grant which is awarded to undergraduate students
(students enrolled in a post-baccalaureate teacher certification
program may also be eligible). A lesser known federal
grant is the Federal
Supplemental Education Opportunity Grant (FSEOG).
Many colleges have available institutional grants, which
can be awarded to students based on either financial
need or merit.
Financial Need –
This type of grant is awarded to students who require
financial assistance. By completing a FAFSA,
the college can determine if a student is eligible for
these types of grants.
Merit – A merit-based
grant is awarded to students who have demonstrated academic
achievement or possess a skill or talent in a specified
field such as music, athletics, drama, or art. This
type of grant is not based on the financial need of
the student.
Resources - The Financial
Aid Office of your school will serve as your best resource
for information on grants and scholarships. You may
also want to visit your counselor if you are still in
high school.
